Strike action averted to allow further talks at Derry Airport

The possibility of further strike action at the City of Derry airport has been averted for at least the next four weeks.

Last minute talks between Derry City Council and Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) on Monday February 18 produced a consensus that more time was needed to broker a deal.

Deputy Town Clerk and Chief Executive Tony McGurk who welcomed the Union’s decision said: “This is an important decision by the Union and staff as it removes the immediate threat of industrial action at the City of Derry Airport and enables us to hold round-table talks between Union representatives and management”.

The dispute over pay for fire fighters and baggage handlers at the airport has already resulted in a two-hour stoppage last Wednesday. The airport management had been expecting a further half day stoppage this week and a full day strike next week if pay demands were not met to the satisfaction of the fire fighters and baggage handlers.

However this planned strike action will not proceed.

Mr McGurk added: “We are hopeful that the willingness shown by the Union to get back to talks will lead to a resolution of the matter and it is expected that the talks will reconvene this week. For passengers, this ensures no disruption to flights and services over the coming weeks”.

Such was the gulf between the two parties that Derry City Council offered arbitration services to the TGWU, who represent those on strike, in an effort to resolve the dispute. This offer was made during a meeting at the Labour Relations Agency and was considered by the union.

Chairperson of the City of Derry Airport Committee, Cllr Cathal Crumley welcoming the development said: “The City of Derry Airport is an important regional asset and we must all work together to ensure its long-term commercial viability and success” (MB)
