Belfast man critical after suicide bid in Dublin police station
A Belfast man is on a life support machine after walking into a police station in the Republic of Ireland and shooting himself in the head.
Police in the Irish Republic said the man, who is reported to have paramilitary links, shot himself in front of three officers and one member of the public who were in Fitzgibbon Street Station in north Dublin on Monday February 18.
Sources say the man, identified as Colm Peake aged 40, is a former paramilitary and has been linked in the past to the republican paramilitary splinter group, the Irish National Liberation Army.
A Garda spokesman said: "At about 5.35pm yesterday [Monday] evening, a man walked into the station and approached the counter where a member of the public was being dealt with by a Garda.
"He took a handgun from his pocket and inflicted a gunshot wound to his head.
"He was tended to by the Gardaí in the station and removed shortly afterwards to the Mater hospital in Dublin where he is undergoing surgery."
The man was later identified when his girlfriend called police after hearing public appeals.
