Festive Breakdown Warning
Motorists could suffer the back-to-work breakdown blues unless they look after their car over the Christmas break, Mondial Assistance UK has warned.
The roadside assistance services provider said the lack of use over the festive period and wintry weather mean cars are more likely to break down than on a normal work day. December 28 and January 4 2010 are predicted by Mondial Assistance to be the busiest days for calls for roadside assistance.
Calls are expected to increase by 40% on these two days as everyone returns to work after the Christmas break only to find their neglected vehicles won’t start or break down mid-journey.
Mondial Assistance warns that motorists who fail to plan ahead are more likely to break down, be left stranded or be involved in an accident.
"Most breakdowns at this time of the year are due to flat batteries rather than mechanical failure," said Lee Taylor, Automotive Director at Mondial Assistance in the UK.
"Try and avoid leaving your car unused for days at a time during a cold snap. So even if you are staying put over the holidays it's a good idea to start the engine and give the car a short run once or twice.
"This will help to avoid the dreaded flat battery, which alone is responsible for 30% of all breakdowns during this time of year."
He added: "If you already have breakdown cover, make sure it covers you at home as there is a good chance that is where a car battery will fail."

Golf 'Safest Car' Of 2009
For the first time ever, the EuroNCAP Institute in Brussels compiled all of its crash test results for the year 2009 and named the safest car of the year. The Volkswagen Golf won out against the competition with a total of 103 points. The Golf had already attained a five-star EuroNCAP rating in the year 2008.

The innovative cars hit the road on 12 December and through this new agreement i MiEV owners will benefit from a national network of i MiEV trained technicians, provided by Mondial Assistance.
