Christmas Twitters From Belfast
New, high-tech communications have arrived to brighten-up Belfast during Christmas time, as the city council keeps in touch on a daily basis with its citizens through Twitter.
The council will be 'tweeting' various useful information and advice until December 25th.
Safety during the party season, ideas for gifts or tips for the turkey recipe will be just some of the 12 'Tweets of Christmas' offered.
The council has been updating its online profile over the last month in social networking platforms like Twitter, which has already more than 1,000 people as followers, or Facebook with more than 450 fans.
In this way, it can communicate its activity to ratepayers as well as also allowing them to express their opinion about the different issues or make proposals.
For example, Facebook fans receive alerts about forthcoming events at council venues, get links to council services, and pictures and information on community-based projects.
Also through this site, the Continental Market has seen more than 9,000 confirmed guests, who left comments about their experience, which will be considered by the council to plan future events.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Naomi Long said they were reaching a whole new audience.
And she added: "It also creates an opportunity for members of the public to communicate more directly with us and provide feedback on council services, events and community projects."
Noting the benefits of new technological advantages, she stated that, as public servants they have to inform citizens of what is happening in the council and to do it with "clear communications".
However, as not all the population are users of online tools, details are also available in 'City Matters', the free council magazine delivered to every household in Belfast.
In the January edition, a special article will explain all the new technologies used by the City Council.
Meanwhile, people with Twitter or Facebook accounts can sign up to follow the council by clicking on the links on its website, www.belfastcity.gov.uk
