'End Double Jobbing Pay': Tories

A future UK Tory government would eliminate the possibility of Northern Ireland politicians collecting two salaries while holding dual mandates.

So-called 'double jobbing' has become a hot topic at Stormont, with pledges from the main parties on the issues.

Many politicians in the province hold more than one electoral mandate. Around two thirds of the 108 strong Assembly are currently sitting councillors.

Sixteen of Northern Ireland's 18 Westminster MPs are also MLAs.

Assembly members who sit in the Commons get paid one full salary and a proportion of the other.

Tories have said legislation could be drafted to end the second pay collected by elected representatives who have more than one job.

Conservatives said they will table amendments to a bill currently before Westminster.

Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson (pictured) has backed his party's proposals.

"We will be putting down amendments on that, within the framework of the bill, which will effectively end double jobbing," he said.

"The effect would be that remuneration would not be available to those who got themselves elected to a second post."

The amendment, if passed, would not end 'double jobbing', just halt secondary wages.
