Sir Reg highlights the importance of partnerships
The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey has said the need to work in partnership has become central to the success of economic development throughout Northern Ireland.
In an address at Antrim Borough Council’s Civic Dinner on Friday February 22, the Minister called on government, local councils, enterprise agencies, universities and other key players to work in hand to create a better future.
The Minister also highlighted the economic importance of self-generated business.
“Small businesses are essential to the Northern Ireland economy and account for 98 per cent of the total business base and 57 per cent of employment in the Antrim area," he said.
“To be successful and effective those businesses have taken, and must continue to take, risks and be innovative."
Referring to the Department’s draft Corporate Plan 2002 – 2005 and the draft Corporate Plan of Invest Northern Ireland which were both published earlier this month, the Minister said: “My Department’s Plan is fully consistent with the Programme for Government and sets out in greater detail how DETI will contribute to the Executive’s objective to secure a competitive economy for Northern Ireland.
“I want to ensure that all interested parties have the opportunity to contribute to, and comment on, the priorities and planned actions.
“The publication of Invest Northern Ireland’s draft Corporate Plan should help stimulate a lively debate on the way we propose to meet economic challenges and your comments on both plans will contribute to the future direction of economic development in Northern Ireland.”
