Eye care company creates 30 jobs in Waterford
Bausch & Lomb, a global eye care company, is to create 30 new jobs at its Waterford operation following the announcement of a £10.5 million investment in the site.
The company will develop the site in order to facilitate the pre-market development and production of its Envision TD drug-delivery system.
Ireland's Investment Development Agency has announced they will provide a slice of the £10.5 million investment total.
Construction is to begin immediately on the addition to the Bausch & Lomb complex that already employs 1800 people in the Waterford area.
The Envision TD drug-delivery system is a tiny implant – about the size of a grain of rice – that is infused with medicine and designed to release therapeutic levels of medicine in a steady, sustained-released flow directly inside the eye for up to three years. It is inserted into the back of the eye in a relatively simple outpatient surgical procedure.
The Envision TD drug-delivery system using the well-known anti-inflammatory drug fluocinolone acetonide is currently in late-stage clinical trials for the treatment of posterior uveitis and diabetic macular edema in the US, Europe and Japan.
Clinical trials for age-related macular degeneration began in January 2002.
