Hi-Tech Communications Boost
A leading worldwide provider of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications for the telecommunications industry has completed an even stronger connection to Belfast.
NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster officially opened new offices for the global telecommunications software firm BroadSoft, Inc. at the Northern Ireland Science Park, Belfast this week.
In 2006, BroadSoft located its European headquarters in Belfast while in October 2009, the company confirmed further expansion plans, supported by Invest Northern Ireland, that will see up to 23 software developers employed within the next three to five years.
The Minister said: "For a globally respected high tech company to not only choose Belfast as the location for its European Headquarters, but to invest in a further expansion only three years later, is a strong endorsement of our local talent pool and knowledge infrastructure.
"Invest NI is increasingly attracting this type of high quality investment from world leading companies and its reputation as a global hub for technology based businesses is growing.
"This new facility in the Northern Ireland Science Park now provides BroadSoft with the opportunity to progress its growth plans and ensure the company continues to provide world class, real-time technical support and training to its European customers."
The expansion of BroadSoft's Belfast operations further establishes the company’s strong presence in Europe, the Middle East, and the Africa (EMEA) region.
The firm's technology is deployed by over 100 service providers in the European market, including Telefonica, T-Systems, TDC, Slovak Telecom, Belgacom and KPN.
BroadSoft’s Vice President of Operations Geoffrey K. Hicks said: "The capacity to innovate lies at the heart of everything we do, and we find Northern Ireland provides an outstanding environment to promote innovation and tap into talent in the region.
"The infrastructure here is excellent, and will ensure the world’s telecommunications community continues to receive real-time technical support and professional services from our European regional Operations Centre in Belfast."

French IT Company announces 63 Belfast jobs
A French-owned IT company has announced the creation of 63 new jobs in Belfast. The leading European telecommunications company, which provides management of electronic records and customer relations across the world, currently employs 18,000 people in 16 countries. Two hundred of these jobs are in Northern Ireland.

Belfast has failed to make the shortlist of UK cities for the European Capital of Culture 2008 bid. Imagine Belfast 2008, which was set up by Belfast City Council to manage the city's bid, expressed its "disappointment" at the news.

A team from Imagine Belfast 2008 travelled to the Department of Culture Media and Sport in London yesterday to make its submission to the judging panel tasked with short-listing three to six cities.
