250 Jobs Lost In Sligo

Some 250 jobs have been lost in Sligo after a medical company announced it was to begin winding down its operations.

The 250 people employed at Stiefel Laboratories have been told that the company would close by the end of 2013.

Established in 1975, the company is regulated by the Irish Medicines Board and claims it has seen continuous growth and expansion over it's thirty year history manufacturing both pharmaceutical and cosmetic products for sale in Europe and Asia. The Stiefel family sold the company, which has been based in South Florida since 1977, to London-based GlaxoSmithKline for $3.6 billion in a deal announced in April.

It produces a range of prescription and over the counter products for the treatment of skin disorders such as psoriasis and acne.

A spokesman for the company said it was proposing to cease operations by the end of 2013 and that it regretted the potential impact of this in terms of job losses.

He added that the move was part of a global review of the Stiefel operation following this acquisition by GlaxoSmithKline and is the result of under-utilised capacity.

The company also announced today it was closing its headquarters offices in Miami and laying off up to 40 people.
