Larne Co-Op To Get Major Boost

A new store projects in the centre of Larne could represent a positive jab for the town's economy, writes Carla Liébana.

The Co-operative Group has announced a new £12m million alteration plan that will triple the size of the current store in Co Antrim port.

The enlarged store, which is planned to be 40,000 square feet, would be built at the Co-op's existing site at Circular Road, making use of adjoining land.

The project plan's feature a corner glazed entrance as a focal point and includes a bridge to cross the River Inver in order to access a new car park.

Brian Lochrie, Co-op Acquisitions Manager, stated the new supermarket would assist in the continuing regeneration of Larne "enhancing the long-term viability of the town as a shopping centre".

Larne Mayor Bobby McKee said it was excellent news for the town, where the alteration would mean the creation of 300 new jobs and be a great boost to the local economy.

Currently, 58% of people do their shopping outside Larne, but having two major supermarkets in the town - with a new Asda store on the way at Redlands - this would surely change.

The Mayor dismissed claims that the new store would damage smaller businesses because it would be aimed at people who want to do a 'big shop' and currently there are not enough places in the town that provide this option.

"As the development is within the established town centre boundary, it would fully accord with planning policy and, in conjunction with the recently approved foodstore development at the docks, would provide customer choice and cater for all the retails needs," he continued.

Giant Sainsbury's was also interested in purchasing the Co-op site - as well as Tesco - which also considered the location before making a £5.1m offer to Larne Borough Council the Inver Park site.

This rival GML development also involves using a portion of Inver Park to create a major food store and hotel on the adjoining old bleach works.

At the moment, outline planning permission has been granted for a district centre at Millbrook, which includes a food store.

Currently, the Co-Op is the only supermarket scheme within the existing town centre boundary and that could have consequences on the schemes still to be decided by planners.
