Further job cuts hit Republic's economy

US data storage equipment company EMC is to seek 160 voluntary redundancies at its European headquarters at Ovens in County Cork.

The company, which employs 1,600 people, made its announcement at a special staff meeting on Monday March 4.

The announcement follows last May's job cuts of 1,100 worldwide as part of a cost cutting campaign, however none of these took part in their Cork operation.

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Harney reacted with disappointment to the news but said the decision was obviously a response to the downturn that has been experienced globally in the IT sector.

The news followed the collapse of Dublin haulage company Con Transport with the loss of 72 jobs. The company blamed the closure on rising labour costs, fuel prices and excessive insurance premium increases.

This came on the same day as around 260 were told their jobs were to go at Youghal Carpets in Cork, and were 70 people were put out of work at the South Korean owned Saehan Media videotape plant in Sligo.

Almost 400 jobs were also lost at the Ardagh run Irish Glass company in Dublin last Thursday.
