Cable & Wireless wins Roadferry contract for NI
Cable & Wireless, the global telecommunications group, has secured a £500,000 contract with Roadferry, the leading Irish Sea logistics and distribution provider, over a five-year period.
The new contract is to supply a complete communications solution, including frame relay data circuits and phone systems, to the company, centred round Roadferry’s new warehouse operation.
Commenting on the deal, Michael Short, IT Manager, Roadferry, said: “We chose Cable & Wireless as our partner largely because of their ability to deliver an excellent service, comprehensive technical backup, and improved levels of speed and reliability across our UK and Ireland delivery network.”
The Cable & Wireless contract will cover management of Roadferry’s data migration to an Internet Protocol (IP) based Wide Area Network (WAN), voice migration to IP telephony, the introduction of ‘wireless link’ technology, frame relay data circuits, dect phone technology (mobile phones, which use infra red technology, that can be used within the premises free of charge) and internet service on a secure and resilient network.
This contract comes on the back of a recent Cable & Wireless contract win with Glanbia, the international food company, with a base in Portadown and the company’s recent success at the 2002 Internet Industry Awards – the ISPAs - in London, where it was named Best Pan-European Business ISP.
The new contract also aims to strengthen the existing relationship between the two companies, which has been in existence for over seven years. Roadferry’s new 100,000 sq ft warehouse in the Port of Belfast has been built to accommodate the company’s expanding business and merge all its Northern Ireland activities onto one central site.
The development has been undertaken by Belfast Harbour Commissioners for Roadferry to utilise on a long lease.

Shorts employees return to work
Over 4,000 employees at Belfast aerospace company, Shorts returned to work today after strike action over pay and conditions was called off. Union representatives from the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) followed on a decision reached yesterday by Amicus to call off their industrial action which began last week.

Power Cut Affects Belfast Businesses
A number of shops in Belfast city centre were left without power due to a fault in an underground cable, NIE Networks has confirmed. Many shops and businesses were affected by the power cut which happened on Wednesday afternoon, 04 January. Power has now been restored to all properties.

280 New Jobs For NI Under New DWP Contract
