Baggott Meets Clergy

Chief Constable Matt Baggott has met with the leaders of Northern Ireland's four main churches.

Mr Baggott, who took over as head of the PSNI in September, held talks with clerics from the Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Methodist denominations in Armagh yesterday.

Discussions centred on the current security threat posed by dissident republicans and the ongoing problem of anti-social behaviour across the province.

Catholic Cardinal Sean Brady hosted the delegation at his home.

Church of Ireland Archbishop Alan Harper, Methodist Reverend Donald Kerr and Reverend Dr Stafford Carson of the Presbyterian Church, along with cardinal said they had welcomed Mr Baggott's appointment.

The Chief Constable, a practising Christian, is the current president of the Christian Police Association.

Cardinal Brady said the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss means of improving cooperation between local communities and the police.

"We believe that the common good is best served by such a positive working relationship and we call on everyone to support the police service."

Mr Baggott said churches play "an influential part in giving us a sense of community".

He described the talks as "very important and valuable".

Dr Carson said the Chief Constable's wide experience in community policing will be of "great benefit" to the people of Northern Ireland.
