Scuffle At Derry Postal Office

As the UK entered the second day of a postal strike, it has emerged that the police were called to a Royal Mail sorting office to deal with disorder.

It happened in Londonderry, after two delivery lorries were blocked from entering a depot.

About 30 postal workers were on the picket line at the Great James Street sorting office when the incident took place.

However after a short time a compromise was agreed and the lorries were left in.

The disruption to postal services in Northern Ireland is part of a two-day action which began at 4am on Thursday when mail centre staff and drivers began a 24-hour walkout.

Today, delivery and collection staff joined the dispute over pay and modernisation plans at Royal Mail.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has said another three days of strikes will take place next week, over disagreements on modernisation plans and pay and conditions.

Royal Mail underlined this morning that it would enter talks with the arbitration agency, ACAS, but said the strike threat must first be lifted.

A spokesman in Northern Ireland also again questioned the reasoning behind the two-day action.

NI Regional Operations Director, Michael Kennedy, insisted senior CWU officials had reached agreement on a deal on Tuesday of this week after talks with Royal Mail's management - and then went ahead with the strike action anyway.
