Methody Tops First Choir Competition
A leading Belfast school choir has been back on stage to win yet another competition, writes Carla Liébana.
Methodist College Choir took the honours at the first semi-final of Co-Operation Ireland's School Choir '09 which took place yesterday in Belfast.
The choir will sing again in the grand final at the Belfast's Ulster Hall.
The jury, formed by Dr. Geoffrey Spratt and Mark Duley, decided the Choir of Methodist College was the best and should go forward to the grand final on 15 November.
The winners offered a unique interpretation of two very complicated pieces, 'Deamon irrepit callidus' (from Tomas Luis da Vittoria) and 'She Moved Through The Fair' (arranged by Anderson Craig)
The other four choirs taking part were from St Dominic's High School from Belfast, St Louis Grammar School, Ballymena, Carrickfergus Grammar School and St Paul's High School, Bessbrook.
All five choirs - each from secondary level schools - showed their musical quality performing two songs each one, only accompanied by a pianist.
Each choir’s repertoire had to include two contrasting pieces, contemporary piece and classical piece. This variety ensured that the competition was dynamic and didn’t lose the rhythm at any time.
It also offered to the jury a wider range of things to evaluate, by considering both musical elements.
This is the first of its kind that has been organised by Co-operation Ireland.
This peace-building charity tries to advance mutual understanding and respect by promoting practical co-operation between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Almost 80 schools from the entire island entered the competition, which is being sponsored by RTÉand the Titanic Quarter, with just 20 remaining to go forward to the finals of every region.
Yesterday was the first regional heat with the other three due to be held in Dublin on the 16 October, Cork on the 22 October and in Sligo, on the 23 October.
The four regional winners will participate in the final at Belfast's Ulster Hall, next month.
