BBC 'Has Improved Regional Coverage'

A new report has shown that the BBC has made "significant improvements" in delivering coverage of one of the regions. Northern Ireland news is now getting more airtime on a national level, the report has said.

It is an assessment of the progress made by the broadcaster in implementing the findings of a review by the BBC Trust into its coverage of stories from across the regions on its network channels.

The review found that the BBC needed to improve the "range and precision" of its network news coverage.

Commenting, the Trustee for Northern Ireland Rotha Johnston, however, said that while progress had been made in terms of increasing the coverage of stories from the regions on network programmes there were still "important areas for improvement".

"Going back to 2007 when the house prices were starting to change in Northern Ireland, BBC online didn't reflect it was having an impact in Northern Ireland.

"When in fact the biggest changes were in Northern Ireland," she said.

But since then news stories such as the Presbyterian Mutual Society collapse and the young rising star of golf Rory McIlroy were mentioned as being featured on a network level.

Ms Roth said the structural changes that includes the merger of BBC News and English Regions into a single department and the introduction of new training has improved services.
