Top Cop 'Voted' Into Electoral Job
As a general election looms in the New Year, a senior post in NI's Electoral Office has been filled.
PSNI Chief Superintendent Graham Shields (pictured) is being appointed as the new Assistant Chief Electoral Officer and will replace June Butler who left at the end of September.
Douglas Bain, the Chief Electoral Officer announced that Mr Shields will be responsible for the smooth running of the forthcoming General Election and for the management of four of the Area Electoral Offices.
He will also perform a number of key roles in Headquarters functions.
Commenting on the appointment, Douglas Bain said: "I am delighted that the selection process found someone of Graham Shields' calibre to fill the position so ably held by June Butler since 2002.
"The Assistant Chief Electoral Officer plays a key role in the delivery of free and fair elections as well as in the management of the Electoral Office and its staff.
"I am very much looking forward to working with Graham and drawing on his wealth of management experience in the run up to the General Election," he said.
Mr Shields will take up appointment in January 2010 upon leaving the PSNI where he currently holds the senior rank.
