Boy Dies After Rope Swing Accident
A young boy has died after apparently hanging himself as he played on a rope swing in his back garden.
It is believed that eight-year-old Harry Rowse, of Carcroft, Doncaster was playing with friends on 10 July when the accident happened.
It is understood the boy slipped and the rope became tangled around his neck.
He was freed by his stepfather who "desperately" fought to save him.
He was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary and then to a specialist unit at Sheffied Children's Hospital where he was put on life support, he died five days later.
South Yorkshire Police said a post-mortem was carried out on Wednesday and an inquest will be opened later.
A police spokeswoman said "it was reported to police via the ambulance service that a boy had been found hanging from a tree in the garden of his home in Carcroft".
Harry's grandfather, Lawrence Jobling, 77, said "the whole family is devastated" and that he was a "smashing little lad".
Simon Hickton, head of Harry's school, Carcroft Primary, said Harry he "was full of energy, smiles and new friends".
"Our sympathy is now with his family as they try to come to terms with this tragic accident," he said.
Police say they are not treating the death as suspicious.
