Delays For Commuters After Service Suspension

Thousands of commuters faced long delays today after services at London's Liverpool Street station were suspended after an accident yesterday.

Reports say that debris or falling scaffolding dropped onto the tracks last night at around 7.15pm.

A 1,300 tonne bridge is currently being built across the existing railway tracks as part of the East London Line extension into Shoreditch.

The suspension affected commuters travelling into the capital from eastern England including parts of Essex, Cambridge and Norwich today.

A Transport for London spokesperson said that "contractors were jacking up the bridge when the jack collapsed and debris from the supports for the bridge fell onto the tracks".

A spokesman for National Express East Anglia said that one train had hit the debris but no one was injured.

British Transport Police say that an engineer will examine the scene once the obstruction is cleared.

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious. Some rail services have resumed following the incident.

A Stanstead Express line replacement bus service is in operation for passengers.
