Gazza Held Under Mental Health Act
Former England international football star Paul Gascoigne has been arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
The 40-year-old midfielder - widely known as 'Gazza' - who won 57 caps for England and scored 10 goals in his international career, was detained at the Malmaison Hotel in Gateshead, Newcastle on Wednesday evening.
A Northumbria Police spokesman, said: "Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.
"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no one was injured during the incident."
The former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur player has had a well-publicised battle with alcohol and mental illness. His early career was plagued by problems relating to his heavy drinking.
He was also hospitalised in January 2005 with pneumonia and last year underwent surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer.
Gascoigne also played for Glasgow Rangers, Lazio, Middlesborough and most recently was manager of Kettering Town. However he was sacked as manager after only 39 days.
