Release Of Teddy Bear Insult Teacher Sought
The UK Foreign Office is continuing efforts to attempt to secure the release of a British teacher who has been jailed for 15 days in Sudan for allowing her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.
Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, received the sentence and will be deported once it has been completed.
She escaped conviction of the more serious charge of inciting hatred, for which she could have received 40 lashes, a fine and six months in prison.
The Foreign Office has been in contact with the Sudanese government in a bid to secure the release of Mrs Gibbons.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has expressed "the strongest terms" the UK's concern at her detention.
The Foreign Office has confirmed that they were having further contact with the Sudanese government today in a bid to find a "swift resolution" of the issue.
Mrs Gibbons was arrested on Sunday in Khartoum after allowing her class of primary school pupils to name the teddy bear in September.
