Met Chief Faces Vote Of No Confidence
Metropolitan Police chief Sir Ian Blair has been given a vote of no confidence by members of the London Assembly.
Conservatives and Liberal Democrats assembly members ensured the motion was passed by 15 votes to eight, while seven Labour members and one Green member supported Sir Ian.
Sir Ian has been facing calls to resign over the fatal shooting of Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes in 2005.
However, addressing assembly members before the vote, Sir Ian again insisted that he would not step down from his post.
He apologised once again for Mr de Menezes' death and also said that his force would be appealing against a court decision, which found that the Metropolitan Police breached health and safety laws over the death.
Sir Ian stressed that there was a difference between one failure among thousands of operations and systematic failure, stressing that he would have resigned had he been guilty of multiple failings.
Sir Ian has received the backing of London mayor Ken Livingstone and Ken Jones, the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is due to publish its report into the shooting of Mr de Menezes on Thursday.
Sir Ian may also learn shortly whether he will face an emergency meeting of the Police Authority where a vote of confidence may also be held.
