Ex-Rwandan soldier jailed for tourist murders

A former Rwandan solider has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for the murder of eight tourists, including four Britons, and a tour guide at a Ugandan park.

Last week, Jean-Paul Bizimana, 31, was found guilty of the murders, which took place in March 1999.

The group of tourists, all from the US, UK and New Zealand, were abducted by a gang of Rwandan Hutu rebels during a trip to track rare mountain gorillas at the Bwindi National Park, near Uganda's borders with Congo and Rwanda.

Four Britons, two Americans, two New Zealanders and their tour guide were murdered, while nine others survived, including a French diplomat, who was given a message condemning the US and UK's support for Rwanda's Tutsi-led government.

Three other Rwandans were arrested in March 2003 in connection with the killings. They have been charged in the US over the deaths of the two Americans.

Bizimana and the other Rwandans were all members of the Liberation Army of Rwanda, whose members were behind the mass genocide of the minority Tutsis and moderate Hutus in 1994.
