Three More Die In Superbug Outbreak
Sinn Fein have called a public enquiry into the outbreak of the superbug Clostridium Difficile, otherwise known as C-Diff, following the confirmation of three more deaths in the Northern Health Trust area.
This is the first time that the strain has been detected in Northern Ireland and Antrim Area Hospital has been dealing with the main fallout from an outbreak of a particularly virulent form of C-Diff, known to cause severe diarrhoea, which is particularly dangerous to the elderly and frail.
C-Diff is a form of bacteria which can cause tetanus, botulism and gas gangerene and can be found in the intestines of both ill and healthy people alike.
The contagious superbug is usually transmitted from one patient to another either by direct contact, via healthcare staff or by contamination of the environment itself.
The bacteria can be killed by soap and water so hospital staff, patients and visitors are advised to wash their hands with soap and water and use alcohol gel on wards.
Officials have said they are taking every effort to combat the outbreak which caused 23 deaths so far.

Findings Of Hospital Superbug 'Harrowing'
The results of a public inquiry into an outbreak of a hospital superbug, Clostridium Difficile, in Northern Trust hospitals were revealed today. It is believed 31 people died as a result of the outbreak in the trust area between June 2007 and August 2008.

Beds Closed At Altnagelvin Area Hospital Amid Bug Outbreak
All non-urgent routine procedures have been cancelled at Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Londonderry in an effort to stop the spread of a vomiting bug. The Western Health Trust said that approximately 25 beds at the hospital are to be "temporarily closed" at the hospital, also citing staff shortages and a "number of ongoing challenges".

Baby Dies After MRSA Outbreak At NI Hospital
A baby has died after an outbreak of MRSA at the neonatal unit of the Royal Jubilee Maternity hospital in Belfast. An investigation has been launched and the death is being treated as a "serious adverse incident". Two babies contracted the bacterial infection late in the summer, with one child managing to make a recovery.

Hospital Wards And Hotel Closed Following Norovirus Outbreak
Six hospital wards and a hotel have been closed following an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug, the Norovirus. Five wards at Altnagelvin Hospital and one ward at the Waterside Hospital have been temporarily closed to new admissions following confirmation of the outbreak.
