Balmoral High School set to close

Education Minister Maria Eagle has announced that Balmoral high School will close at the end of August 2007.

The Minister highlighted that the decision to close the post-primary school, located in the outskirts of west Belfast, was made in the best educational interests of the pupils.

Ms Eagle said: “The decision to close a school is never an easy one and I carefully consider all arguments before reaching a decision.

“In every case, however, my top priority is the needs of the pupils involved.”

She continued: “I believe that long-term educational interests of the children concerned will be best served in a larger school, where they will be able to avail of increased educational opportunities.”

Enrolments at the school have fallen from 405 in 1997/1998 to 154.

Tullymacrette Primary School near Dromore, County Down is also set to close at the end of August this year.

Only 14 children were enrolled in this school in September 2006, with no children enrolled in Year one.
