Officers Injured In Nationalist/Loyalist Clashes

Six police officers have been injured when trouble broke out at a nationalist/loyalist interface in east Belfast.

The trouble occurred at the meeting of Castlereagh Street and Mountpottinger Road on Wednesday evening.

About 100 young people are thought to have been involved, with reports of a petrol bomb and other missiles being thrown at police. One person has been arrested.

Two officers are being treated for minor injuries.

Community representatives assisted the PSNI in calming the situation.

It is thought the violence broke out as a result of parties held to celebrate the death of former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Alliance East Belfast MLA Judith Cochrane has condemned the trouble.

"There is no justification for any attack on the police," she said.

"They are there to maintain the rule of law. Everybody should show their support for law and order by fully respecting the Police.

"The Police are the only people who should be investigating any public order incidents, nobody should look to take the law into their own hands.

"I hope that these two officers will make a swift recovery from the injuries they sustained."
