'Major' Sculptures Announced For Craigavon

Two major sculptures have been announced as part of a public art project for Craigavon Borough.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has revealed a funding package of £177,800 towards the project.

The aim of the installation is to "greatly enhance the physical appearance of the town centres and provide character to the recently completed public realm scheme in Portadown and the ongoing works in Lurgan," according to the Executive.

The Lurgan sculpture will be located at the existing YMCA site in Market Street, while the Portadown sculpture will be situated in the Greenfield space between West Street and the Northway.

Nelson McCausland said: "I am pleased to announce this package of funding for the Craigavon Borough which will serve to further enhance the appearance of these two traditional market towns with the installation of two of the most impressive pieces of public art in Northern Ireland.

"As Minister for Social Development I am aware of the current difficulties facing our towns and cities. My Department has invested heavily in both Lurgan and Portadown town centres by way of Public Realm improvements and revitalisation initiatives."

The Minister added: "The art sculptures reflect a history and tradition of the towns and will add character and become a visual landmark within the town centres for the foreseeable future. This project will be the first of its kind to take place in both towns and a major boost to both, enhancing vibrancy in the heart of the town centres and fundamentally making them more appealing to tourists, residents and businesses."

Mayor of Craigavon, Councilor Carla Lockhart, commented: "I’m delighted that we’ve secured the funding for the installation of these iconic sculptures, they are a great example of partnership working and will be a major boost for the towns in much the same way as The Tinnies have been for Strabane. The sculptures are fantastic and I am really looking forward to seeing them within the town centres."
