'Rough Justice' Slammed By SDLP

A Londonderry politician has said there must be no "kangaroo justice" dished out in Northern Ireland.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has condemned the shooting of a man in the back of the leg in the Bogside area on Tuesday night.

The victim is a 24-year-old man who was attacked by three masked men who forced their way into a house at Cable Street in the Bogside area at about 10pm.

One went to an upstairs bedroom and fired a number of shots, none of which hit the man.

A second masked man then went upstairs and shot him once in the back of his right leg. The gang ran off through the back door. The victim's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and the PSNI have appealed for information.

The SDLP man said that dissident republicans have been behind a spate of shootings in Derry in recent months.

"Unfortunately, going by other acts of this nature in the recent past in Derry, this appears to be another act of thug justice.

"Kangaroo justice was wrong in the past and it's wrong now. There can never be any justification for vigilantism and the people of Derry are angry that those carrying out the attack are claiming to do so in their name.

"They're not acting in the interests of the people of Derry," he said, noting that he was however glad that the victim is not suffering from life-threatening injuries.

"This could so easily have been a tragedy once again," he said.
