Gloria Takes Over 'One' Hot Seat

One of NI's best known veteran presenters is to be on the couch next week on BBC TV's prime time TV slot.

Gloria Hunniford, 69, (pictured here) has also 'struck a blow' for the anti-ageism lobby by landing a temporarily post replacing one of her Northern Ireland compatriots, Co Down's Christine Bleakley on the BBC's One Show when she goes on holiday in August.

Gloria, from Co Armagh, will be joined by Gethin Jones as a replacement for Adrian Chiles, who is taking a break at the same time as 29-year-old co-presenter Christine.

The former Good Evening Ulster presenter assumes the role as the BBC is embroiled in a new ageism row after Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips, 66, was replaced by singer Alesha Dixon, who at 30.

Gloria and Gethin start on the show next Monday, August 17, running to Friday, August 21.

The following week John Sargeant will join forces with Myleene Klass to present the popular prime time BBC programme.

Homes Evacuated In Co Tyrone And Co Down
Homes have been evacuated in two separate security alerts in County Tyrone and County Down today, 19 January. In the first security alert, a suspicious object was found at at a house on the Gortgonis Road in Coalisland. A number of nearby houses have been evacuated and the public asked to avoid the area at this time.

Over 4,000 Time-Expired Distress Flares Retired At PSNI Event
A 67-year-old marine distress flare was among more than 4,000 time-expired flares retired at an event facilitated by the PSNI on behalf of the Royal Yachting Association Northern Ireland. The flare disposal day has been described as a "well-supported initiative" with a total of 4011 flares handed in by members of the public and boating community.

Police Praise 'Live Time Reporting' Of L'Derry Drunk Driver
A man has been arrested and charged with drink driving and drug offences after a member of the public reported reckless driving L'Derry. The PSNI have thanked the member of the public for making the 'live time report' of their concerns about the driver travelling on the Strand Road area.

Foundation launched in memory of former Blue Peter presenter
A new organisation aimed at raising money for cancer charities has been launched today. The Caron Keating Foundation was launched in memory of the former Blue Peter presenter who died from breast cancer in April.
