14 killed in Belgium gas explosion

At least 14 people have been killed and more than 200 injured following a gas explosion in Belgium this morning.

The blast occurred in the Ghislenghien industrial park near the town of Ath, 20 miles south-east of Brussels.

The BBC has reported that a number of people who were investigating a leak to gas pipeline died when the explosion occurred. The massive explosion scattered body parts and debris hundreds of metres away from the blast site.

A nearby motorway has been closed and residents in the surrounding area have been told to stay indoors and close their windows.

Soldiers and military helicopters have been sent to the scene to help ferry the injured to hospital.
