Man remanded in custody over firearm charge
A 34-year-old man has appeared in Belfast Magistrates Court today charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Ronald Alexander Hoy, from Ganton Park, Tullycarnet in Dundonald, was charged with having an Uzi sub-machine gun and 21 rounds of 9mm ammunition with intent to endanger life.
A PSNI constable today told the court that he believed he could connect the accused to the charges.
Detectives recovered the weapon after receiving a call from a member of the public reporting that a man had left a city centre bar in a taxi, armed with a knife on Wednesday evening.
At around 11.30pm, police stopped the car at the junction of the North Road and the Upper Newtownards Road and searched the vehicle, where they found the weapon.
It is understood that Hoy was arrested at the scene.
A short time later detectives carried out further searches at a house in the loyalist Tullycarnet area of east Belfast where they discovered the ammunition.
Mr Hoy was remanded in custody to appear again via videolink on May 19.
