Robbers steal £50,000 in cash from security guard

Around £50,000 in cash was stolen during an armed robbery in Belfast on Tuesday morning.

The incident, which involved a Securicor guard, occurred outside a bank in east Belfast at around 10.45am.

A man armed with a gun approached the guard on the Cregagh Road and threatened him before grabbing the box and making off in a maroon car.

The car was later found abandoned on Lismaine Street, just off Ravenhill Avenue.

Today’s incident is the latest in a long line of robbery attempts involving cash delivery firms in Northern Ireland.

Last week, two men were arrested after police foiled a Securicor robbery at a filling station in Co Down. However, on the same day a Securicor van making a delivery to the B&Q store in Newtownabbey was robbed.

Earlier this month £1.2 million was stolen from a security firm during a robbery at a filling station in the Finaghy area of south Belfast.
